Jonathan had a blast at Scout Camp last week. He came home happy, smelly, & very dirty with only a slight sunburn & a few scratches. For those of you that may remember last year, he didn't use the sunscreen I packed him, instead he used the sun screen his scoutmaster had on hand. Unfortunately, Jonathan didn't realize he was allergic to it & he came home burnt to a crisp, with big blisters on his face, arms & shoulders. This year, he wore socks, so he didn't have any blisters on his feet like he did last year. When he came home last year, he looked like he had gone through war. This year, he looked like a scout who had learned his lesson from last year.
Like last year, he completed a ton of merit badges. He finished Lifesaving, Archery, Sculpting, Camping, and Wilderness Survival. He also learned how to cook many delicious breakfast foods & has offered to do all the morning meals while the cousins are here. He enjoyed the COPE course which focused on team work and he liked playing ultimate boomerang with his troop. He said he loved camp.
End of Summer Projects
We only have this week & next week to finish up projects before Mike & family come for 8 days. I assigned each child end of summer projects to keep them busy the next few weeks and reduce the number of times they ask, "when will the cousins be here?" I made them a list (yes Lara, I am a huge list maker too). Here is there lists:
Jonathan
1. Finish up merit badges. As of today, he has 3 merit badges that he has a few requirements left, 2 that require work over 90 days, and 1 that he hasn't started. I am hoping he can get it all done before school starts, but if he doesn't, he'll have to work on them every Saturday until he is finished. But he has 15 merit badges completed, which is incredible & we are very pleased with all he has achieved this summer.
2. Trim the lilacs in the backyard.
3. Clean out the shed.
Kaitlyn
1. Finish up her Faith In God Requirements. She is turning 12 in September & moving on to Young Women's. She wants to complete her Faith In God. She is about 90% finished, & if we work on one goal a day, she will have it finished by August 1st. Yesterday, we did a family service project. It was kind of chaotic, but in the end, Kaitlyn said she really liked how she felt doing service for someone else, so it was worth it. The reason it was chaotic was Jonathan complained the whole time (typical teenager) & Hannah wondered off. Luckily we found her quickly, at a neighbors jumping happily on their trampoline. But since it was almost dark, it gave us quite a scare. Today, we are working on practicing good manners & courtesy. Emily is working on the requirements too for her Faith In God Award.
2. Wash all the toys & stuffed animals in the Game Room. Emily & Hannah are helping. This is a BIG job.
Emily
1. Practice math facts 10 minutes a day

1. Finish reading lessons
2. Help with toys & stuffed animals
Melody (Me)
1. Put all of my projects on hold until the kids are in school
2. Make a list of projects to work on during the school year
3. Enjoy the last weeks of summer
What I am reading:
I am reading So Your Teenager Knows All The Answers: An LDS Parent's guide to surviving the teanage years. I have learned that that Jonathan & Kaitlyn are totally & completely normal & I am doing pretty good as a teen's mom so far. More on this great book later.
