Now I Can Talk About It

Now that the dust has settled, & I have calmed down *a little*, I can talk about the drama we have been through the past few weeks. Maybe writing will purge the annoyance & stress I have felt completely & I can be done with it.
Since Day 1 of nursing school, we have known that Stephen would have to do a preceptorship his last semester of nursing school. It is 135 hours of clinical at a hospital under the direction of a supervising nurse that HAS to be completed in 4 weeks. That works out to be three 12 hour shifts for three weeks and two 12 hour shifts the fourth week. We knew there was no way Stephen could work full time, study, & do his preceptorship. So since nursing school started in Aug 2006, we have been preparing for this. We didn't take a vacation last year, not even to Idaho to see family, so we could build up time off. We have saved money & built up a food storage. During Christmas break, Stephen got an email from his clinical instructor saying she had arranged his preceptorship & it woould start the 1st week of Feburary. All he had to do was call the preceptor the last week of January & find out her schedule. Great, everything is set.
Stephen calls the preceptor the last week of Jan. Guess what? She had NO idea she was proctering Stephen, the clinical instructor NEVER asked her too before. But, she has proctered other nursing students and is willing to procter Stephen. WHEW! BUT, guess what? She is only a part time nurse, and she can only do 8 of the 11 shifts Stephen needs.
Stephen contacted Weber State to let them know what was going on & ask what to do. Their response was basically it was his problem, not theirs. Seriously. So he contacts his clinical instructor & she says she will work with him the last 3 shifts. BUT she can only do it the last week of his proctership. That means five 12 hour shifts in a row. It stinks, but Stephen is willing to do it.
BUT, the instructor emails him yesterday, & says that won't work for her after all, and wants him to do the three shifts the first week of April. Is she serious? Stephen has to go up to Weber State that week to take a do or die test to graduate. Does she really think he can do 36 hours of clinical, homework, work & take his exit exam? Seriously??
So Stephen emails her back telling her that isn't an option & asks if he could be assigned to follow another nurse on Fridays during the next 4 weeks. She replies, "Great idea." Now, we really are all set if she follows through & sets up the shifts.
It annoyed me because we have worked so hard to get ready for this. We have paid so much for his education. You would think that the clinical instructor would have set up his preceptorship like she was suppose to. You would think the nursing school would help resolve the issue. After all, isn't that what they are paid to do?
Through it all, I have felt peace from the Holy Ghost that it will work out eventually. All I can say now, is I am sooooo glad that Stephen will graduate in NINE weeks! YAY!!!!
